A Grade 3 Teacher and how she uses 'Story Buddies' with her class...

Story Buddies book bag has been a wonderful addition to my class. It is easy to begin and only takes 5 minutes of class time every second day. I got a Snowy Owl stuffie to go in my book bag. I added one non-fiction and one fiction book about Owls to my bag for the kids to take home and read and included a journal for them to write in. The kids love taking the stuffie places and doing different activities with the owl stuffie. They named the stuffie "Snowy." They cannot wait until it is their turn for taking the book bag home. They love writing and drawing in the journal. Each person presents their journal entry when they return it to class. This helps with their oral presentation skills. I have noticed quite an improvement in their written skills. They read other classmates entries and try to use proper punctuation, capitals and interesting sentences because they know others will be reading their entry.
We have been through the class list once already and now I have added a friend for "Snowy." He is a porcupine we named "Cinnamon." I received the new stuffie as a Christmas gift. We are now reading about porcupines in our book bag. The possibilities are endless with the Story Buddy book bag idea. I have given out challenges to research or draw things about owls and porcupines. You could dedicate a bulletin board to your book bag research or come up with your own creative idea. I would not hesitate to recommend you buying a book bag and trying this in your class. Karen Holland
